Clooney Drops From Guy From UNCLE

He will not star for Soderbergh.... Clooney ankles U. N. C. L. E. ! Blimey, came total Variety-speak there as it were. Sorry about this.... But apparently it's correct, a minimum of based on Deadline: George Clooney has made the decision to not star for old mucker Steven Soderbergh in the film version from the cult spy Television show. While he'd never quite been 100% confirmed, it had been expected the Cloonester would reunite together with his Solaris/Ocean's director for that movie, which Soderbergh still apparently expects to occur the sixties for any classic Bond feel, although having a likely lighter tone as suitable for the initial series. Now the director will have to get a new Napoleon Solo to star in addition to securing within an Illya Kuryakin to fight the evils of THRUSH (we recommend a powerful cream). Possibly Channing Tatum, who Soderbergh loved dealing with a lot on action thriller Haywire that he's made the decision to slot another film collaboration in line with the actor's idea (stripper pic Miracle Mike) into his schedule, might be along with a go, though he's likely too busy using the next G. I. Joe outing. Having a script by Contagion's Scott Z Burns, U. N. C. L. E. is presently still the following planned production relaxing in Soderbergh's diary, with Miracle Mike and Liberace looking for next, prior to the filmmaker retires as introduced. Or otherwise. There appears to become some debate on that front...

The Artist Trailer Online

Step in amount of time in black and whitened.... It isn't frequently you get a movie that offers to be greater than a simple homage towards the quiet creation of old, but filmmaker Michael Hazanavicius seems to possess drawn them back using the impressive-searching The Artist. A clip has become online at Apple. The author/director, most likely most widely known on these shores for that two French spy parodies within the OSS 117 series, goes even more in time with this truly original take a look at a 20's quiet film star facing the finish of his career because of the encroaching allure from the talkies. OSS' preening, smooth, moustached spy themself, Jean Dujardin, stars once again as George Valentin, a guy that has been the king of Hollywood for a long time but has become on much shakier ground using the arrival from the today's technology. He meets and falls for Peppy Burns (Bérénice Bejo) a youthful dancer and singer searching for her large break. They start rapport, but, in true A Star comes into the world style, she begins to eclipse him, driving Valentin into fits of bitter, jealous rage. Shot in black and whitened and taking advantage of title cards to state dialogue, The Artist is unlike anything you've seen lately. It scooped the very best Actor prize only at that year's Cannes Film Festival for Dujardin and was nominated for that Palme d'Or. It had been also highly suggested by our very own Damon Smart. Featuring the kind of John Goodman, Malcolm McDowell, Penelope Ann Burns and James Cromwell among its cast, The Artist is going to be on November 23 in the usa, there is however no set release date right here yet.

Anderson & Constantin: Partnership leads to B.O. bounty

Jeremy Bolt, Paul W.S. Anderson and Ray Stevenson, on the set of 'The Three Musketeers 3D,' which Constantin is producting.Though their partnership officially began in 2001, in a strange way the relationship between Paul W.S. Anderson and Constantin started with his first pic, "Shopping," in 1994. The film caused controversy in his native U.K. over its violent dystopian style, which didn't do Anderson any good at home, but brought him and his producer Jeremy Bolt to Hollywood to adapt the videogame Mortal Kombat, kicking off its franchise. " 'Shopping' showed a lot of action and youthful rebellion," Bolt says. "It got quite a bit of attention and showed a desire to make American-style movies."Some years later, Anderson bumped into Bernd Eichinger, then head of Constantin, who had seen "Shopping" at a German film festival and was impressed. "I'd made a small British art movie, but I wanted a spectacular opening because I wanted it to be cinematic at a time when I felt British cinema wasn't," Anderson says. "And we'd run out of money so I spent my entire director's fee to do all these helicopter shots. And the first time I met Bernd, he said, 'As soon as I saw those helicopter shots at the start of your movie, I knew you were a filmmaker I wanted to work with.' "As the ink was drying on the contract, Anderson had become obsessed with a videogame called Resident Evil, and was eager to adapt it for the bigscreen. He and Bolt inquired about the rights only to find that they had been sold two years earlier. To Constantin."It was a very happy coincidence all around," says Anderson. "As (our shingle) Impact, we had just done a joint-venture deal with them, they had a property that they had been developing unsuccessfully, and I came in with passion and energy to breathe new life into it. So it was off to the races."Today the partnership has proven successful. The 3D "Resident Evil: Afterlife" was Constantin's first global No. 1 movie, and "Three Musketeers," also a 3D film, is the biggest movie they've ever made. Anderson is about to shoot the fifth "Resident Evil" in 3D and his next project, "Pompeii," also in 3D, expects to be even bigger. But with "Three Musketeers," Anderson is already toning down the violence in favor of action and hoping to reach a wider family-friendly audience. "In the past we've been quite successful in hitting boys and men, and we want to expand that market now and appeal to women as well," Bolt says. While not yet ready to announce, Anderson and Bolt say they are developing a number of projects with Anderson concentrating on directing maybe one large-scale film per year and Bolt looking to produce additional films through the company."We're looking at branded high-end genre projects," Bolt says, "movies that I can elevate to feel like A-movies, but have some brand awareness. Now Paul may not want to do a horror film again or a straight action movie again, so that might be an area where we might work with another director. And I would like to work with some younger directors who would benefit from Paul's experience -- having him as producer."Our desire is obviously to build Impact with Constantin," Bolt adds, "and to increase Constantin's success and sustain it. Because in my experience, just on the basis of development, they're very filmmaker-friendly and there is a family atmosphere."Anderson agrees. "The thing I like about working with Constantin is, and any film director would appreciate this, I deal with Martin Moszkowicz, Robert Kulzer and that's it. There's just the four of us and if we all like something, we go for it. There's no one to stop us and there's no one to hold us back, and that allows us to work really fast."In terms of the relationship with Constantin," he concludes, "by the time I finish 'Pompeii,' I will have finished four straight movies with the same creative team, the same distributor -- that's a hell of a run, even if you don't figure in the other four 'Resident Evil' movies and all the other films we made together. So I feel very fortunate to be in that relationship. "One of the best things that ever happened to me was Bernd Eichinger seeing my movie." Contact the Variety newsroom at news@variety.com

'Real Steel' Clip Shows How Robots Learn to Fight

OK, so it sounds like a weird 'Transformers' meets 'The Fighter' in the near future actioner, but for some reason we're kinda looking forward to 'Real Steel,' a robot boxing story directed by comedy maven Shawn Levy. Maybe its the thought of seeing Hugh Jackman sans hirsute accoutrements. Perhaps it's the chance to see Evangeline Lilly again on the big screen. Maybe it's the opportunity to see if Levy can stretch himself for some serious work. Or maybe we just like underdog films (even if it's about a robot). Whatever the case, the folks at DreamWorks have just released a new featurette that goes behind-the-scenes of the film and shows how Levy used motion capture of boxing legend Sugar Ray Leonard to create his robots movements. 'Real Steel' opens Oct. 7. Read the synopsis below, and then check out the clip after the jump. A gritty, white-knuckle, action ride set in the near-future, where the sport of boxing has gone hi-tech, 'Real Steel' stars Hugh Jackman as Charlie Kenton, a washed-up fighter who lost his chance at a title when 2000-pound, 8-foot-tall steel robots took over the ring. Now nothing but a small-time promoter, Charlie earns just enough money piecing together low-end bots from scrap metal to get from one underground boxing venue to the next. When Charlie hits rock bottom, he reluctantly teams up with his estranged son Max (Dakota Goyo) to build and train a championship contender. As the stakes in the brutal, no-holds-barred arena are raised, Charlie and Max, against all odds, get one last shot at a comeback.

Starz Signs Multi-Year Production Deal With BBC Worldwide Prods.

On the heels of their collaboration on Torchwood: Miracle Day, Starz Entertainment and BBC Worldwide Prods. have signed a multi-year production agreement. Under the deal, the two companies will co-develop and co-finance multiple series, which will be produced by BBC Worldwide Prods. The potential output is estimated at more than 100 hours of drama series programming. Starz gets distribution rights for the U.S. and English-speaking Canada, while BBC Worldwide will distribute the series internationally. The deal essentially gives Starz a (non-exclusive) production arm without the large cost associated with overhead as Starz is looking to compete against its more established pay cable competitors on a far smaller production budget. The network already uses a similar approach in casting where it has been using the services of independent casting director Marc Hirschfeld who has been essentially serving as head of casting on a non-exclusive, consulting basis. The deal with BBC Worldwide will allow Starz to put on the air bigger-budget series as BBC Worldwide will deficit finance the shows, covering the difference between the license fee paid by the network and the series' budget. The company plans to cover the deficit by international sales, so all series developed and produced under the agreement with Starz will be designed with the global marketplace in mind. The first project in the works is the recently announced by BBC Worldwide Prods.' head Jane Tranter Da Vinci's Demons, written by David S. Goyer. The pact instantly makes BBC Worldwide Prods., known primarily for producing the ABC reality hit Dancing With the Stars, a major supplier of scripted series in the U.S. "When I came to Starz, we determined that forging strong international partnerships would play center stage in financing our ramp-up of dynamic original programming, said Starz's CEO Chris Albrecht. "This exciting partnership with BBC Worldwide Prods. is a major step in that direction."
