2011's Best Episodes: Modern Family's Sexy Time, Good Wife's Heartbreaking Split

Archie Panjabi From Oprah's remarkably low-key farewell towards the year's most soul-crushing break-on The Great Wife (Kalicia, no!), the entire year was full of fantastic hrs of television - virtually which we viewed. There have been teary goodbyes (Friday Evening Lights' Texas forever! Smallville's tights and plane tickets!), tense face-offs (why can't all CIA interrogations occur around the front porch of the cabin, like on Homeland?) not to mention we made room for any little Glee (because certain underdogs deserved it). Which made their email list. Stay tuned all week for the top 25. Here's the 2nd batch within our extended countdown of 2011's best episodes (Get caught up first with Episodes 25-21): 20. "Caught in the process," Modern FamilyStraight from the Three Company's guide, the Emmy-winning episode built on the misunderstanding that isn't exactly novel: Gloria accidentally e-mailed naked pictures of herself, meant for Jay, to Claire and Phil, who've also just damaged their very own kids when you are caught in the process. ("Whatever it had been, it appeared as if father was winning," Luke states of his parents' love-making.) 19. "To Become, Act 1," Sons of AnarchySeason 4's penultimate episode is really a fascinating fight of wills between your show's female energy gamers. Gemma (Katey Sagal) makes her large move, showing Jax the best way to his chair because the mind from the SAMCRO motorcycle club, while Jax's girlfriend Tara (Maggie Siff) out-Gemmas Gemma by looking into making plans for she and Jax to depart Charming - and Gemma - forever. "What's happening?Inch a stunned Gemma asks. "All you trained me," Tara replies. SAMCRO might be a boys' club, but it is that old girls that keep surprising us. 18. "Allow the Sun Shine In," Males of the Certain AgeThree 50-something males get colonoscopies, play golf and gripe about existence - an ideal recipe to have an hour of compelling TV, no? Well, no, however when Joe, Terry and Owen have a journey to Palm Springs to have their colons checked, the discomfort of enlightenment is not just, you realize, physical. It will likely be a very long time before we, ahem, meet the increasing demand left with this touching series, however it was episodes such as this which make us realize we are just grateful this cool little show ever managed to get around the air. 17. "Moving Away From," The Great WifeThis may be the episode where Kalinda cries, a celebration that by itself qualifies as earth-breaking within the existence of the stoic character. The tears come after Alicia (Julianna Margulies) informs Kalinda that they recognizes that she rested together with her husband. The face area-off between Emmy those who win Julianna Margulies and Archie Panjabi is chilling, particularly since it might be their last scene together for any lengthy while. Bonus: Sarah Silverman, inside a rare dramatic turn, guest-stars as who owns an internet site that facilitates adulterous matters. 16. "The Spoil," JustifiedIt's tough to highlight just one episode of Margo Martindale's Emmy-winning season as Magazines Bennett, but her rousing speech in "The Spoil." Martindale's easy, smooth-as-Mags' homemade moonshine delivery reminds us how wise a villain she's, and just how a fight she's prepared to set up to safeguard her individuals "method of livin' and dyin.'" Even though Mags' icy mean streak did not fully emerge before the following episode, her actions within this hour put us on serious red-colored alert.

Wim Wenders on Pina, 3-D Epiphanies and Until the End of the World at 20

After more than four decades of creative peaks, valleys, experiments and triumphs that have established him as one of the most eclectic filmmakers of his generation, Wim Wenders has ventured into entirely new territory for his new documentary Pina: 3-D. The film’s subject — the late, legendary choreographer (and Wenders’s longtime friend) Pina Bausch — likely wouldn’t have wanted it any other way. Part concert film, part biography and all warm-hearted tribute, Pina profiles Bausch’s work and influence both through the eyes of her colleagues and against the backdrop of the world that inspired her. Wenders frames this legacy vividly — from a stage lined with soil to a somnambulant stroll through the park to a vaguely hallucinatory trip on a hanging commuter train — while the 3-D technology entitles the dances themselves to the space and dimension that eluded the director over decades of previous attempts to collaborate with Bausch. The results have moved festivalgoers from Berlin to NY and Los Angeles, and they finally reach U.S. theaters this week in limited release. Wenders spoke with Movieline about Pina, Pina, pushing the limits of 3-D, the 20th anniversary of his great, globetrotting Until the End of the World, and how to enjoy the reviled Lou Reed/Metallica collaboration LuLu. Pina has caught on quite dramatically since premiering earlier this year in Berlin. What’s your take on the reaction — and having reestablished Pina’s legacy onscreen? I think the reaction by audiences by audiences not only in Europe and America — but also by critics — is really a reaction to the beauty of Pina’s work. A lot of people have caught on to the film in very emotional ways. I think they are surprised and at the same time happy that there was something they may have missed there, but now they can at least see it right in front of their eyes. Obviously you and Pina go back quite a ways, but how and when did this kind of collaboration first arise? You have to go back a quarter of a century. We first started to talk about it in the mid-’80s, and then we just toyed with the idea. We really took it more seriously in the ’90s, and it was Pina who pushed for it. As soon as she did, I realized, “We’ve got to do this.” I had to sit down and write out a concept and actually write out how I would do this — how I would film the glory of Pina’s dance. I realized I didn’t have, in my craft at least, what it took to make it happen. I felt I didn’t have the adequate tools, and the more I thought about it, the less I was convinced I could do justice to Pina’s art with my possibilities as a filmmaker. It was the invisible wall between what Pina did onstage and what I could put on the screen. I was honest to Pina and told her, and she was patient with me. She said, “Eventually you will find it. There’s got to be a way.” And that was a running gag between us for more than 10 years. “When are you ready, Wim?” And I said, “Not yet, Pina.” Until I found a way — and that was not in myself, not in my soul or in my heart. I found out all of the sudden that there was an addition to my craft that I had not known yet. And that was called 3-D. What was your first reaction to the resurgence of 3-D and its improved technology, particularly as a filmmaker? I was sitting in a theater putting on these glasses for the very first time… I mean, I’d done it 40 years ago for some Hitchcock movie, but that was long ago. I even remember in the ’90s, I saw a Cirque du Soleil film in 3-D. But the technology wasn’t really available. So 3-D was altogether forgotten, and it had never really been an option for us when we thought how to do it. And all of the sudden I’m sitting there with these glasses on, not thinking of much, really. I saw a film called U2 3D — a very early 3-D film, one of the first on the market. I thought it would be fun to watch a 3-D concert. But from the first shot on, I was mesmerized. I almost didn’t see or hear the film anymore; I just saw the possibilities. And the possibilities were the answer to 20 years of questioning ourselves how to film dance. There it was, because for the first time we could enter the very kingdom of dance — and that was space. It hit me that that had been the invisible wall — that we had never had access to that kingdom. How did you select the pieces that were most compatible with 3-D? How did you determine they were compatible? We selected the pieces together — Pina Bausch and I. Their compatibility with 3-D was striking. In a strange way, Pina’s dance and 3-D were made for each other from the beginning. It was like a match made in heaven; it was beautiful, this affinity for each other. From the beginning, I knew they were made for each other, and they would bring out the best in each other. Say, for instance, Caf Mller and Le Sacre du Printemps — the first ones that we chose. Caf Mller is a stage full of these chairs and these dancer running through these chairs, and the space itself is so beautifully staggered with these objects — these chairs — you couldn’t have thought of it in a more ingenious way for a 3-D shoot. And Vollmond (Full Moon), the last piece we shot — with this water onstage, and all this water coming down and being splashed toward you? It was like it couldn’t have been choreographed more nicely for 3-D. Beyond the dances, though, some of the scenery and logistics themselves are stunning. What went into deciding to shoot on a train or in a traffic intersection? When we started to shoot that was all wishful thinking, because we started in 2009 — the infancy of 3-D. There was not much equipment available. The first leg of the shoot we shot on the stage with this huge monster — this huge dinosaur — of a crane to carry the equipment. We would not have been able to go into the hanging train or the city; the equipment was not light enough. And to shoot with Steadicam was completely wishful thinking on the first leg. You have to remember this was months before Avatar even came out. You couldn’t just rent any equipment. It wasn’t available. And then my stereographer realized how badly I wanted to get out into the city, and he singlehandedly created the first Steadicam rig that was available — at least in Europe — and with the very first generation of cameras that were mobile, we went out and shot out and about in the city. That was the next spring. There just seem to be so many onlookers out in the city. Were people curious? I swear to God, nobody seemed to know what we were doing there. And Wuppertal is an industrial, working-class city. They don’t care about some film crew standing on the corner. We were left alone as much as Pina was left alone for 40 years. That’s what enabled her to work in that little city and work with that continuity. She was able to work unobserved. How much of directing itself is in fact choreography? Say, between actors, or with the camera, or with actors and the camera against space? In the case of Pina, the choreography already existed, and I had to respect it. And I wanted to respect it as much as possible. My choreography was the choreography of the camera — a sort of reverse-angle choreography: I had to make the cameras sort of react and dance along to Pina’s choreographer. So I was a choreographer of the camera. I probably was such a choreographer after my initial meeting with Pina, which was in the mid-’80s. I instantly got high doses of Pina; I was so blown away with everything that was available that I saw a retrospective of six in a row, and that was, of course, not quite an overdose, but definitely mighty doses of Pina Bausch that really changed my life. And the first movie I did afterwards was Wings of Desire, which by any standard was the most choreographed film I ever made. There was a circus, a trapeze artist… It was a very choreographed movie.

Lionsgate, Summit In Talks: Bloomberg

Summit Entertainment and Lionsgate Entertainment are in discussions about a possible merger, according to Bloomberg, which cited two unidentified sources with knowledge of the situation. With the first part of the Twilight vampire franchise’s finale coming off a hot worldwide opening, talks that have previously broken down over money and control issues may be heating up again. There also have been rumblings that other companies are interested in a dealwith Summit or Lionsgate either separately or in some kind of combination. All the discussions are preliminary and speculative and could easily fall apart. Lionsgate has a fairly large library of movies and TV content that would be vastly enriched by Summit’s TheTwilight Saga franchise. The latest movie, Breaking Dawn Part 1, has generated more than $220 million domestically in its first two weekends plus nearly $270 million overseas. The franchise has grossed in excess of $1 billion. Breaking Dawn Part 2 will be released next year.Lionsgate has its own potential hit franchise based on a comparable set of young-adult novels in The Hunger Games. The first movie opens in March. Lionsgate also has an active TV division that produces Mad Men, Nurse Jackie, Weeds and Boss, among others. An analyst cited by Bloomberg said The Hunger Games and its sequels could generate between $220 million-$733 million in additional cash flow over the next few years.

Ben Foster on Tilda Swinton in 'We Need to Talk About Kevin'

'We Need to Talk About Kevin'"Those eyes. Eyes like wind tunnels. Watching her work is like witnessing a master glass blower. She glows from within, changing shape, twisting and expanding, each performance impossibly unique. Tilda Swinton's breathtaking turn in 'We Need to Talk About Kevin' should be required viewing for all actors seeking the inner life expressed. We follow her 18 years as she rears and bears the guilt of parenting a child whose humanity is all but supernaturally absent. Tilda communicates the unbearable with the fewest of words, her entire body transmitting the full color spectrum with the slightest of gesture. Her work in this film reminds me of the great silent film stars. Commanding the frame with an unusual human intelligence, her underlying humor is ever present, even while falling into the greatest depths of grief. We can sense a soul that seems to have no bottom and it is a gift to witness a talent that has no limit."

Keck's Exclusives: Not So Long Ago Kills Off Its First Legendary Disney Character

Not So Long Ago, Catherine Lough Haggquist On last night's Not so long ago, Cinderella's Fairy Godmother was snuffed out by Rumpelstiltskin just like she was going to wave her wand making Cinderella's fantasy evening become a reality - making her the very first of Disney's legendary figures to become wiped out off ABC's new fantasy series. (And thinking about the show has been written and created by a couple of Lost's longtime authors, it is a safe wager they will be a lot more in the future.) But works out authors Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz did not even realize they'd accomplished this milestone until I clued them in. "My dear God, I suppose we did," exclaims Kitsis. "I do not think we even considered it in individuals historic terms. As storytellers, we simply thought it might be awesome if Cinderella reached the ball via a cope with Rumpelstiltskin, not the Fairy Godmother." Adds Horowitz: "Among the styles we are having fun with about this show may be the cost of miracle. Using miracle even permanently is really a harmful proposition." As the authors say it is possible we're able to begin to see the Fairy Godmother again in pre-dying flashbacks, Horowitz demands, "We actually want the stakes actually was and also the audience to not feel scammed." Might there be implications to killing off this type of beloved figure? "I'll say this," teases Kitsis. "Basically were Rumpelstiltskin, I'd be careful for that other fairies [for example Pinocchio's Blue Fairy], because they are out for revenge!" How can you all experience Not So Long Ago killing off Disney figures? Will you be prepared to accept six dwarves rather than seven? Seem off within the comments section. Edgar' Premiere Red Carpet The weekend's third new nationwide entry is Clint Eastwood's Leonardo DiCaprio starrer J. Edgar, which opened in five cities on Wednesday in a move designed to trigger reviews and build word-of-mouth. The movie, a biopic of the legendary F.B.I. chief J. Edgar Hoover, grossed $54,000 on Wednesday and another $46,000 on Thursday (theater traffic often dips on Thursday). Ryan Kavanaugh's Relativity, which fully financed and produced Immortals, is counting on fanboys to buoy the violence-laced R-rated film, a fantasy adventure along the same lines as box office hit 300. Immortals, a key test for Relativity, cost $75 million to produce after tax rebates. STORY: 'Immortals': What the Critics are Saying Immortals scored high marks in test screenings, and also stars Mickey Rourke, Stephen Dorff, Isabel Lucas, Kellan Lutz, Freida Pinto and Luke Evans. The pic opens day and date in a number of key territories, including China (through Relativity's co-venture with Skyland), Germany, Italy, the U.K., South Korea, Japan and South Korea. Relativity insiders say Immortals only has to open to $25 million for the company to be on sound financial footing, since so much of the budget was financed through foreign presales. Warner Bros. is projecting a $10 million to $12 million opening forJ. Edgar, which is in the wheelhouse for Eastwood's films, although Friday matinees suggest the film could open higher. The biopic of the legendary F.B.I. chief also stars Armie Hammer. Related Topics Box Office Relativity Media Henry Cavill Tarsem Singh Immortals Jack and Jill

Adobe Prepares To Close The Lid On On Questionable Expensive Player Plug-In

Adobe states it'll “no longer adapt” the once-dominant program to handle multimedia and animation on computer systems and mobile products — andthat Jobs once notoriously banned from Apple items. Within an email to designers initially acquired by ZDNet, Adobe added that it'll “continue to aid the present Android and PlayBook designs with critical bug fixes and security updates.” Jobs brought the opposition towards the program, that they stated this year was hard to rely on, susceptible to hacking, battery power hog, and gave Adobe an excessive amount of energy within the services that may be offered on mobile products. Apple, Google, and Microsoft stated they preferred an opensystem, HTML5 — althoughFlash made it, finding houses on the internet Android and Rim mobile phones. Even Jobs backed off somewhat this past year, enabling 3rd party designers to include Expensive to their programs for Apple products. However the trend lines were relocating the incorrect direction for Expensive. For instance, Microsoft stopped accommodating it in theWeb browsers because of its latest cell phones.

The X Factor's Rachel Crow: I'm Singing Etta James Next (And Simon Can't Stop Me!)

Rachel Crow If 13-year-old X Factor contestant Rachel Crow has her way, she won't be doing another peppy pop song next week. Asked after Wednesday's show if she wanted to stick to mentor Simon Cowell's youthful, upbeat music strategy should she survive Thursday's elimination, Crow said: "Honest? Right now, if I do make it, no." She sang a sassier version of the Waves' "Sunshine" on Wednesday's show, and last week, a mash-up of Justin Bieber's "Baby" and The Supremes' "Where Did Our Love Go." Read our recap of Wednesday's Top 12 performances on The X Factor But for a follow-up, Crow's got something more grown-up in mind. "[Beyonce's] 'If I Were A Boy' was the best performance I've ever done in my life," she told TVGuide.com, referring to her earlier bootcamp audition. "So I'm going to do a slower Etta James song next week if I make it." And if Coach Cowell wants to go a different route? "I'm sweet, but I got attitude and I've already argued with Simon about that song," Crow said. "I told him, 'I'm doing it and you can't stop me!'" Crow also revealed that her tweaks to "Sunshine" were borrowed from a girl who performed the same version on the U.K. edition of X Factor. "It's got more attitude, more 'You have to go.' I aimed it right toward Simon," she said with a laugh. Fox orders Season 2 of The X Factor Another contestant who wants a change of pace? Josh Krajcik, the 30-year-old Ohio native being steered by judge Nicole Scherzinger. And unlike Crow, he's feeling the need for speed. Krajcik said he did wind up digging Scherzinger's take on Christina Perri's "Jar of Hearts" - although, "at first, I wasn't thrilled," he admitted - but if he's still around next week, he'd be happy to nix the ballads. "I would love to sing a Beatles song, maybe something a little more upbeat," he said. (Last week, he sang a slowed-down version of "Forever Young.") "We've had discussions about songs that are a little faster, a little more rock 'n' roll, and so I think we're going to delve into that on Friday, assuming I'm still here." Check out today's news InTENsity's Nick Dean, meanwhile, said the 10-member kid group had no problem convincing mentor Paula Abdul to let them do what they wanted. Her original idea for their Wednesday performance was a mash-up of "Kids in America" and The Go-Go's "We Got the Beat." "We were like, 'OK, this is... stepping on the boundary of cheesy," Dean said. "We wanted to something different but still current and relevant. So we ended up fighting for changing the song." Fortunately for them, the group's John Lindahl said, Abdul "is really open to our ideas. We told her we wanted to revive 'Kids in America' with a modern twist. She said, 'Fine, just find a good song.' We found LMFAO's 'Party Rock Anthem.'"

Gillespie Quits Zombie Pride & Prejudice

Third director bites the dustLots of films lumber through Development Hell, but Pride And Prejudice And Zombies seems being suffering greater than most round the Production Flatlands of Dis. The undead literary comedy-horror mash-up just lost Craig Gillespie, who's the next director to find out he's had enough.Gillespie (Lars As Well As The Real Girl, Fright Evening) had inherited the film compiled by michael White-colored, who'd needed to stop due to dedication at Cinemax. White-colored consequently had acquired the project when David O Russell dropped it, favouring a holiday to Old St Louis with Vince Vaughn. Other names inside the hat formerly incorporated Neil Marshall (The Descent,Centurion) and Jeffrey Blitz (Spellbound), but whether what is this great puts them within the running (or whether or not they continue to be interested) remains to look.Because of date cite Gillespie's departure becoming an friendly one associated with casting issues. This is often a polite approach to proclaiming that nobody seems to wish to be inside the film. Charge role in the zombie-smashing Elizabeth Bennet needs up to now apparently been switched lower by Natalie Portman (still a producer, to date as everyone knows), Emma Stone, Mia Wasikowska and, most recently, Blake Lively. Shooting was designed to can start the start of next season, though no cast now, once again, no director, Lionsgate should be thinking about reorganising their diary.

REVIEW: The Double Chokes on Cold-War Tropes, Gere-Grace Mismatch

The Double shows its cards right away, when the screen fills with a cable news show on which a congressman insists “Russia’s back!,” noting that the country has reignited its nuclear program, its president is openly hostile toward the U.S. and it has more covert agents inside our borders than ever before. Russia’s back, baby! And what a relief that is, at least in terms of spy thrillers — things seemed so much simpler in the Cold War days, when it was a straightforward matter of superpower versus superpower, a grand schism of ideology, and all an actor needed to do to play a bad guy was affect an accent and an air of stoicism. The Double, which marks the directorial debut of Michael Brandt, a screenwriter on Wanted and 3:10 to Yuma, revels in Iron Curtain kitsch while indulging in gruesomely clichd set-ups involving sleeper agents, code-named assassin cells and a weary former CIA agent being lured out of retirement and forced to partner with an FBI eager beaver. That CIA agent is Paul Shepherdson (Richard Gere), who lives alone and makes time to take in the occasional neighborhood Little League game. (When he tells the mother of one of the players this as they sit together in the stands, she’s charmed, and doesn’t seem at all like she’s going to check the sex-offender registry as soon as she gets home.) He’s reluctantly summoned back into the fold by his former boss (Martin Sheen, who deserves to have been given more to do), who believes the recent murder of a senator shows the signature of “Cassius” — the name the CIA gave to a top Soviet assassin who was the only member of a group of seven agents to never have been caught. There’s been no sign of Cassius for years, and Paul, who lead the efforts to catch the other six killers, insists it’s a copycat case and that his old nemesis is dead. Nevertheless, he’s teamed with Ben Geary (Topher Grace), an FBI up-and-comer who wrote his master’s thesis at Harvard on Paul’s tracking of Cassius, and who’s convinced the assassin has reemerged. Paul, it goes without saying, doesn’t immediately take to being paired with this snot-nosed kid. He doesn’t actually speak the words “snot-nosed kid,” but he does bark, “Where were you when the wall came down?”, to which Ben genially answers that he was watching it in TV instead of pointing out that he was likely in elementary school. Gere has never been an overly expressive actor, and his initial dislike of Ben and gradual softening to him blend into a general air of bemusement, as if he’s always mildly surprised to find himself sharing a screen with Grace. There’s reason to that — Grace is sorely miscast here, as any sort of authority to be reckoned with and as a loving family man and father of two. I don’t dislike him as an actor, but his vague smarminess undercuts any expertise or likability he’s supposed to possess. You don’t want Paul to learn to respect Ben, you want him to ditch the guy and stop taking his calls. Despite the absence of chemistry between the film’s two leads, The Double does contain some delightfully over-the-top twists that make no sense but are great fun to consider. One early reveal involves the identity of the double agent the title refers to, and adds some serious complications to the mission at hand. The implausibilities pile on as the story goes along — the film sandwiches in flashbacks to 1988, in which everyone looks exactly the same but are shot through a filter, and then jumps back into the present day investigation, in which Paul and Ben interrogate another survivor from the group of assassins, played by Stephen Moyer. Why does Moyer sound like Yakov Smirnoff while Cassius speaks perfect American English? How is Paul able to identify a generic-looking suede coat as Russian-made at a single glance? What does the shady informant/dealer of goods from the homeland sell that he couldn’t put on display at a specialty store — pirated Russian soap operas? Unpasteurized dairy products? If you’re going to find The Double tolerable, it’s best to let these and the many other questions that arise slide. Despite similarities, this film is several rungs down the ladder from Salt and lacks the charisma of a lead like Angelina Jolie to pull you past nagging silliness. The Double does manage a few nicely done setpieces, including a highlight involving a prison breakout and another moment in flashback that appears to borrow from the training sequence in Shiri. But the film provides no real thought on the complications of life as a double agent, on national loyalty and sacrifice or even the standard sad assassin angst. The only emotion it provokes is Cold War nostalgia — in Russia, direct-to-DVD movie comes to you. Follow Alison Willmore on Twitter. Follow Movieline on Twitter.

Happy Existence

Tom McCaffrey is passionate concerning the 19 nineties techno music in Happy Existence. A Tilt Pocket production. Produced by Rachel Fernandes, Michael M. Bilandic, Spencer Kiernan. Executive producer, Abel Ferrara. Directed, put together by Michael M. Bilandic. With: Tom McCaffrey, Amanda Salane, Gilles Decamps, Kate Lyn Sheil, Alexander Ross Perry.Occur cramped houses and hole-in-the-wall stores inside the East Village, Michael M. Bilandic's nanobudget comedy "Happy Existence" plays as being a poor schlub's "High Fidelity," centered around Keith, a 35-year-old, music-loving sad sack faithful not to the eclectic but for the outmoded techno in the the 19 nineties. No matter the derision his listening options regularly inspire in trend-following Gothamites, the pic's title is not entirely ironic, as Keith's genuine appreciation in the tribal music experience ultimately yields profound, if largely unshared, satisfaction. Fittingly professional produced by cult helmer Abel Ferrara, pic could develop its own fringe following. Fired from his latest disastrous DJ stint within an trendy tapas bar where he refuses to sit in the clientele's tastes, Keith (deadpan standup comedian Tom McCaffrey) clings anxiously to his vinyl emporium of rare trance classics, where a handful of die-hard disco brainiacs congregate. He decides to throw a vintage-style rave to enhance money to be able to save the failing store, taking the assistance of his handful of pals and infrequent clients. He utilizes legendary DJ Liquids (Gilles Decamps), a Eurotrash cokehead now spinning celebrity-studded tales of his decadent heyday instead of records. (The pic could not make any try for connecting the disco past to the current worldwide revival of electronic music.) Director Bilandic's humor is acerbic but never cruel. Keith hops the ferry to Staten Island for just about any money-seeking family visit, waxing poetic round the finer points of Detroit versus. Chicago house styles for his effusively encouraging but absolutely not aware parents, who tremulously slip him $ 100. Even Keith's clumsy progresses a street kid half his age (Amanda Salane), happening within the squalid, takeout-tossed apartment, ultimately register more as misguided detours in relation to friendship than pathetic sexual fumblings. Like Ferrara, Bilandic takes note of his misfit's epiphanies, twisted, condemned or out-of-date though they could be, though Keith achieves a pace of lumpen passivity unknown to Ferrara's angst-ridden Christ figures. Familiar NY indie stars and company company directors for instance Alex Ross Perry and Kate Lyn Sheil come in odd corners, but it's Perry d.p. Sean Cost Williams' distinctive lensing providing you with "Happy" its raw, imagistic energy. The color-saturated, communal space Keith yearns for is not really absent while he strides along, his earphones flowing out techno trance, using a city suffused with lurid colors that can come for the forefront inside the pic's underpopulated but very passionate rave moments.Camera (color, HD), Sean Cost Williams editor, Bilandic, Ernest Saito music, Da Vinci Boi, Hot Hero production designer, Matt Master art director, Abe Scott costume designers, Linnea Vedder, Meg Browning appear, Luke Allen appear designer, Neil Benezra. John Malone Becomes The No. 1 Land Owner, Passing Ted Turner

Ted Turner seems destined to be one-upped by his longtime ally, Liberty Media’s John Malone. First it was in media, where Malone remains a player long after Turner was pushed out of Time Warner. Now Malone has passed Turner as the nation’s biggest private land owner — a title the founder of cable channels including CNN, TNT, and Cartoon Network held since the 1990s — according to The Land Report. Malone bought more than 1M acres of timberland in Maine and New Hampshire this year, bringing his total land holdings to 2.2M acres. That passes Turner, who has more than 2M acres, mostly in Montana.Malone tells the publication that he caught “this land-buying disease” when he toured Turner’s ranch two years ago. The Land Report’s annual survey of the largest private U.S. landowners just looks at acreage owned by individuals, families, family-owned companies, and family-controlled foundations.

The drama premiered Sept. 20 to 5 million viewers and a 1.6 rating in the advertiser-coveted adults 18-49 demographic. The second episode of the series from showrunner Chad Hodge and 20th Century Fox Television, tumbled 19 percent, luring only 3.8 million viewers and a 1.3 in the demo. Its most recent episode dropped even more, attracting 3.2 million viewers and a 1.2. STORY: Hugh Hefner: The Playboy Interview PTC president Tim Winter said Tuesday, "Bringing The Playboy Club to broadcast television was a poor programming decision from the start. We're pleased that NBC will no longer be airing a program so inherently linked to a pornographic brand that denigrates and sexualizes women." PHOTOS: Fall TV Death Pool: Will 'Charlie's Angels' or 'How to Be a Gentleman' Be Axed First? The PTC said its campaign against the program was in part, to differentiate what was suitable for broadcast ad cable programming, "Since much of the new NBC leadership comes from the cable industry, we are hopeful those making programming decisions will consider more carefully the difference between the publicly-owned broadcast airwaves and a subscription service like cable. The network's decision to air this series was a violation of the public trust that comes with the privilege of holding a broadcast license. "We are grateful to every member of the public who responded to our call to take action against this attempt to mainstream a brand that is synonymous with the pornography industry. We hope other broadcasters heed the important lessons of this programming debacle," Winter concluded. Dreams of Flying Dreams of Falling

Christine Lahti stars in Dreams of Flying Dreams of Falling. An Atlantic Theater Company presentation of a play in one act by Adam Rapp. Directed by Neil Pepe. Sandra Cabot - Christine Lahti Wilma - Quincy Tyler Bernstine Dr. Bertram Cabot - Reed Birney Dirk Von Stofenberg - Cotter Smith Cora Cabot - Katherine Waterston Celeste Von Stofenberg - Betsy Aidem James Von Stofenberg - Shane McRaeAdam Rapp writes funny lines for scary people. That's not a shabby talent and it's on smart display in "Dreams of Flying Dreams of Falling," an absurdist comedy of manners about the primal instincts that surface when a rich and pretentious Connecticut couple host an intimate dinner party. Neil Pepe's slickly helmed production for the Atlantic Theater Company puts scribe's skills in the best possible light. But, comes the reckoning, Rapp doesn't deliver the goods. For all the savage talk and bestial imagery, there are no teeth -- and consequently no bite -- to this offbeat but superficial comedy. To suggest the social affectations of Sandra (Christine Lahti, exercising her sublimely wicked wit) and Bertram Cabot (Reed Birney, making easygoing look easy), set designers Andrew Boyce and Takeshi Kata have hoisted a massive chandelier over the handsomely dressed table in the couple's tasteful dining room. But we already know that Sandra's a snob because she's teaching her maid Wilma (played with subtle sass by Quincy Tyler Bernstine) to speak French. Before the Cabots and their guests actually sit down to eat, Rapp ("Red Light Winter") front-loads his play with some cruelly funny cocktail-hour fun and games. Bert tosses out the first conversational ball by telling his friend Dirk Von Stofenberg (Cotter Smith) how much he enjoyed a recent trip to Borneo, in his awed opinion "a place where nature and mythology seem inseparable." But know-it-all Sandra keeps cutting in with scathing criticisms and corrections, and after driving poor, emasculated Bert out of the room, she practically rapes Dirk. Preening herself like a well-groomed bird of prey (credit Theresa Squire for the stunning Chanel suit), the supremely confident Lahti swoops down on this spellbound pigeon and pretty much eats him alive. The avian imagery is not out of place, because flocks of wild geese seem to be committing suicide and landing in the Cabots' backyard. One corpse turns up as the main dinner course, while others are fed to the African lion that the Cabots' teenaged daughter Cora (perfectly creepy in Katherine Waterston's poised perf) claims is imprisoned in the basement. Keeping the metaphor aloft, Dirk recalls his childhood fantasy of being able to fly. His suicidal son, James (Shane McRae), actually gave it a try -- and fell. By the time dinner is over, the sky has turned ominous colors and the nature imagery has been beaten to death. In addition to those geese on the lawn and the lion in the basement, there are references to wildebeests, crocodiles, orangutans, barracudas, deer, and the rabid wolf in "Old Yeller." The brutal nature of the human animal is a familiar dramatic theme and a favorite one of Rapp's, but much of the symbolism here seems gratuitous and without point. These suburban couples may be every bit as contemptible as their children think they are, but real savagery seems beyond them. Unlike the married couples who lose their civilized veneer in Yasmina Reza's "God of Carnage," T.S. Eliot's "The Cocktail Party," or any number of plays that take place at a dining room table, the Cabots and the Von Stofenbergs are given nothing to fight about, no reason at all to bare tooth and claw. And for all Rapp's allusions to creatures that fly, crawl, swim, or creep on cat's feet, the monsters in this derivative play are actually pretty tame beasts.Set, Andrew Boyce and Takeshi Kata; costumes, Theresa Squire; lighting, Tyler Micoleau; original music & sound design, production stage manager, Erin Maureen Koster. Opened on Oct. 3, 2011. Reviewed Sept. 30. Running time: 1 HOUR, 20 MIN. Contact the Variety newsroom at news@variety.com

Dancing's Derek Hough: Ricki Is Not Obsessed with Kirstie Alley

Derek Hough Derek Hough and Ricki Lake may have topped the Dancing with the Stars leader board last week, but Hough by no means thinks they're the ones to beat. "It felt great, but if you look, the scores were really close, so it's going to be a very competitive season," Hough tells TVGuide.com. "I know people are going to do really well next week and whatnot, and as long we can keep improving as far as her skill set, then I think we'll be in good shape." Not in good shape? His apparent inability to add their scores. Find out what the three-time champ has to say about this math skills, why Lake was never hung up on being Kirstie Alley, and why he chose to film a movie last season instead of going for a threepeat.Fall Preview: Get scoop on your favorite returning showsHas math always been hard for you?Derek Hough: [Laughs] I know, I know. And no, it has not. I want everyone to know that I got an A+ in math when I was in school! How's the rumba going?Hough: Great! I tend to choreograph the beginning last. I don't know why I do that. I leave the first 20 seconds open and go back to it last, but on the first day, I had the other three-quarters done and she picked it up really quickly. That pleasantly surprised me. You have to tell a story this week. What's Ricki's?Hough: What I really like about her story is that it's about triumph, which is what I think we all want. She was saying that this past year, she wasn't fully allowing herself to be happy or to be open to love again. So, the fact that she's able to open up again and to be happy was a huge triumph for her. It's kind of fantastic that it's happening now and I'm kind of part of it in the present. I think there'll be some pretty heavy and dramatic stories this week. Hers is happy. I think it's really sweet. She's been saying that Kirstie Alley was her weight-loss inspiration. Is she that focused on it or is the show just playing up her comments?Hough: No, I think Kirstie was her initial inspiration, but she's not really hung up on her or obsessed with her. She's actually happy with who she is, and the fact that she's losing weight is a huge bonus. I think the biggest thing is that she's just happy. Part of that is having a healthier lifestyle. She's her own person. She's doing her own thing. She hasn't weighed herself. She's measuring herself in inches. She doesn't know how many pounds she's lost, and to be honest with you, that's the correct way to do it as far as dancing goes. It's not about the pounds; it's about the inches. You build muscle, so you might gain weight, but you will look and feel better. Dancing's Chaz Bono: The support has been overwhelmingIs there anything you're working on improving this week?Hough: Her footwork and leg action. The rumba is a lot different from the jive, obviously. There's a lot more control and it's more precise. It requires a lot of strength and technique in her legs. We want to make everything look tight and clean.Who do you think is your biggest competition so far?Hough: I think everybody's doing great. I was really impressed with Kristin [Cavallari]. She was great last week. J.R. [Martinez], obviously - I believe he'll be there in the finals. He's got amazing potential. Chynna [Phillips] - she's really great at the ballroom stuff. You never truly know. You might think someone's doing good, but maybe they have a bad week and drop the ball. You can be surprised both ways. How does it feel to be back?Hough: It feels great. [The premiere] was wonderful. It was great to receive that sort of response. That's why I love live audiences so much. It's the instant response and gratification of the hard work you've done. They stood up and cheered. I was telling Ricki, "Isn't this wonderful?" I was really glad she was able to experience that.Check out photos from DancingDid you want to take a break from the show or was the movie [Cobu 3D] a career opportunity you could not pass up?Hough: I think it was a mixture of both. It was my first film, and I want to do more in the future. [But] I definitely needed to have one under my belt and throw myself into the deep end. But on top of that too was the fact that I just won two seasons in a row [with Nicole Scherzinger and Jennifer Grey], and I felt like coming back would be anticlimactic. You didn't want to go for a threepeat?Hough: No. For me, it was like, "Wow! I've just had two incredible seasons. It really can't get much better than that, so I'm going to take one out and then come back." It's difficult going all the way to the end. It's not easy at all. It takes a toll, for sure. You're already the first pro with three Mirrorballs. How badly do you want a fourth?Hough: [Laughs] It would be awesome to win a fourth, but right now it's just one week at a time. Hopefully we can do it!

'What's Your Number' Star Anna Faris on Female Comedies, Strip Basketball and 'The Dictator'

Before Kristen Wiig and her friendly bridesmaids stormed el born area office this summer season making Hollywood realize that women are actually really funny and bankable, Anna Faris was organized since the beacon of female comics. As Tad Friend written within the profile of Faris for your NYer (which printed pre-'Bridesmaids'), "What's at risk [for female comics] is not essentially a tenable sell for 'hard' female comedies but a completely new vantage on romance and, possibly, a completely new approach to seeing males and girls. In . That fresh way may be something such as 'What's Your Number?' Inside the R-rated romcom, Faris stars as Ally, discovered a bag Boston lady moving through existence and sexual partners. When she reads in the magazine that girls who've had greater than 20 sexual encounters are condemned with a information on singlehood, she looks back on her behalf account past associations while using about discovering that clear on her rejected fanatics really was "The Primary One.Inch If possibly her handsome and charming neighbor (Chris Evans) doesn't throw a monkeywrench in Ally's plans first. It's a premise that's ripe for slut-shaming and judgment, but 'What's Your Number?' handles to prevent that -- although delivering Faris with ample options to curse, drink and fall on her behalf account face like Zach Galifianakis in 'The Hangover.' Moviefone spoke to Faris now in regards to the new film, whether she will get an obligation to her gender, and what you should expect from 'The Dictator' with Sacha Baron Cohen next summer season. Using the wealth of 'Bridesmaids' and 'Bad Teacher' this summer season, it feels as if 'What's Your Number?' has been launched inside a perfect instant. You think audiences have lately recognized that comedy might be gender neutral? I have to think that. For this type of very long time it absolutely was completely uncommon to produce an R-rated female comedy. Once I would pitch projects on an outing that was always the fundamental question: "Can it be R-rated? We gotta ensure it is PG-13." So, it's been an extremely exciting summer season. In my opinion my female buddies and myself when 'Bridesmaids' succeeded well, and 'Bad Teacher,' were very excited. I like play women that are untidy. Problematic. In my opinion that's much more interesting than playing a sort-A girl. Once the art galleries always shoot lower R-rated female comedies, how did 'What's Your Number?' even happen? It felt really rare! It felt really special. We shot it last summer season, prior to the success, and so the risk factor felt high. I had been really lucky that New Regency am encouraging, nevertheless the script happen to be kicking around for just about any few years, plus it was always like, "We feel it's funny, but that is dangerous!" It's clearly a sizable coincidence -- which i personally don't like to even go up -- nevertheless the opening scene of 'What's Your Number?' is similar to the opening scene of 'Bridesmaids.' If you saw which more than the summer season had you been like, "Oh, garbage." Yeah! I used to be! I used to be like, "Oh, no! It's surprising it!" Of all the jokes... I realize! I realize! Are there any discussions about maybe changing that in publish-production? No, I don't believe that might be a conversation. It absolutely was like, "Well, okay. Bad.Inch You're a producer on House Bunny now this -- can you look for something more important when you're choosing scripts that you'll also produce? Not always. I appear like I'm this kind of problematic person, so I enjoy play figures that are untidy. I love to experience figures that asexual In my opinion that's very fun, but that rarely happens! This can be a tough anyone to accomplish. I'd rather not function as balance card for the funny guy, The most effective to see figures that have dimensions. I don't care if they're unintelligent, as extended simply because they have dimensions. Both 'House Bunny' and 'What's Your Number?' have strong female figures together with a note underneath all the pratfalls and swears. Just like a female comedian, sometimes you may feel any responsibility o uphold some feminist ideals along with your work -- especially because you've got a large amount of female fans? I have an obligation to my gender! (Laughs) It'll appear silly. It is not like people request Ben Stiller if he feels obligated to fresh fresh paint males within an positive light onscreen. Though female artists, it's certainly lawyer point. Yeah, but this is why there's this sort of feeling of oneness, a little, with female comics. There's lots of support readily available for each other. I believe that it is because we are trying to find the Apatow response we wish our crew of funny individuals who we could cast. You realize when you're acting with another lady, like Ari Graynor or my female buddies inside the movie, how rare you really achieve perform together with other women. It's this kind of relief sometimes, but it's unfortunate it's so rare. Because In my opinion women -- people want to see interesting dynamics with people. The conversation is really loaded: it's good that female-introduced comedies prosper, but it's unfortunate the success remains this type of anomaly it'll get mentioned. The simple truth is! It'll always appear like gender is certainly part of a the main one factor. "Oh, you're funny... for just about any lady." That's kind of discouraging. But also for me -- I've discussed this in other interviews -- I wasn't funny becoming an adult. And so the whole journey is a touch bizarre, however i am really grateful that we achieve do comedy, which i wouldn't trade it for your world. I've be considered a more comfortable person because of it. It's introduced me plenty of pleasure. I used to be very angry. Not to belabor the gender areas of 'What's Your Number?' nevertheless it was nice that Ally wasn't really slut-wiped out by her pals to get plenty of sexual partners. She was harder on herself than almost others. Was that something you actually tight on? It's so funny because the authors which i were enjoy, "20 is kind of low. It must be like 70." The studio didn't agree. Remarkably! (Laughs) Nevertheless the message in the movie is it shouldn't matter I don't think anybody needs to be passing moral judgement on one another. They're modern women in the modern a while and I don't think that for an individual in their early 30s, I don't think that 20 is just too bad if you were single. Your husband Chris Pratt features a nice little runner in 'What's Your Number?' Perhaps you have enjoy coping with him? It absolutely was totally terrifying. We'd an enjoyable experience, however admire him a great deal that we actually was nervous. "Let us say he thinks I'm a terrible actor? So what can i actually do? Could he separate with me at night? In . However love coping with him which i really hope we have to make it happen again eventually. There is a significant role in 'Moneyball,' clearly. Do everybody have kind of wager about which film can do better laminator tl901 office a couple of days ago? I'm prone to kill him if 'Moneyball' beats me. (Laughs) No, I have simply no clue what will happen. Once your movie opens it definitely is terrifying. I used to be like, "Should we just disappear for your weekend. Just type of escape. No internet, no newspapers." However I must leave for Australia -- we're doing press australia wide in the last weekend. I guess which is an acceptable escape. 15 several hours around the flight. Not to spoil anything, there's however a strip basketball sequence in 'What's Your Number?' which has you schooling Chris Evans' character. Are you currently presently so good or was there plenty of movie miracle completed for the reason that scene? I am so bad at basketball. I did so make like two shots nevertheless it needed several hours. Several hours of failure. It's so embarrassing. Then you definitely certainly get nervous as well as the males are poking fun to you because you throw as being a girl or whatever. Therefore I had these fired. (Laughs) But that was frightening... after which it you're within your under clothes, too! Why did Someone said this and think, "OK, this is just what If only to doInch? The thing that was more frightening: the basketball or becoming half-naked? In my opinion really playing the basketball. Certainly. But it is certainly uncomfortable to remain in your under clothes before 300 crew people you have been coping with for just two-and-a-half several days. I realize you've got a number of projects at Vital [an untitled stalker comedy pitch and 'Gold Diggers'], but exactlty what can you say about 'The Dictator' with Sacha Baron Cohen? I am the lady for that reason that certain. It absolutely was amazing. The whole factor. Sacha Baron Cohen can be a comedy genius. The whole factor is improv. It's challenging! You have to be inside your game, but it's also amazing to get familiar with also to witness. That was unlike almost every other filming experience I've ever suffered. From the reading through using that many stars were up for your role. Any idea what placed you over? In my opinion they did undergo plenty of stars. In my opinion they just preferred to obtain somebody that -- I am unsure, really. I am unsure why they selected me. But, that was my first audition in the very very long time plus it was all improv and very thrilling and one hundred percent terrifying. It absolutely was filled with awkward tales. I used to be so lame. I did so the whole cliche actress factor. Oh, terrible (laughs). Photo: Alberto E. Rodriguez/Getty

What's Your Number?

Chris Evans and Anna Faris star in "What's Your Number?" A 20th Century Fox release of a Regency Enterprises presentation of a New Regency/Contrafilm production. Produced by Beau Flynn, Tripp Vinson. Executive producers, Arnon Milchan, Anna Faris, Nan Morales. Directed by Mark Mylod. Screenplay, Gabrielle Allan, Jennifer Crittenden, based on the book "20 Times a Lady" by Karyn Bosnak.Ally Darling - Anna Faris Colin Shea - Chris Evans Daisy Darling - Ari Graynor Jake Adams - Dave Annable Roger the Boss - Joel McHale Mr. Darling - Ed Begley Jr. Ava Darling - Blythe DannerIt's never a good sign when the funniest line in your romantic comedy is, "Did you visit the Holocaust museum?" and has nothing to do with the rest of the movie. Such is the case with "What's Your Number?," a draggy, generally laugh-free outing that wastes a perfectly good Anna Faris, here playing a spacy sexpot who decides, after having slept with 20 different guys, that it's probably time to settle down. With Chris Evans cast as an all-too-obvious Mr. Right, this inane I'll-never-be-slutty-again farce should post OK theatrical and homevid numbers for Fox. Ditched by her latest fling (Zachary Quinto) about five minutes after the opening credits, Ally Darling (Faris) is a boozy Boston blonde whose dating standards have plunged lower than her neckline. When she reads a magazine article about how the average American woman has 10.5 lovers over her lifetime, Ally realizes she's slept with nearly twice that number and is in danger of making herself unmarriageable. That she's recently lost her job and has no apparent interests beyond making clay-figurine dioramas doesn't improve her prospects. Resolving to stop fooling around and find a husband, Ally decides to look up her ex-boyfriends, one by one, in hopes of rekindling an old flame without raising her number to 21. Helping her with some detective work is her neighbor Colin (Evans), a laid-back guitarist and serial womanizer who's clearly hot for Ally himself, though she's wary of hooking up with someone even more whorish than she is. So begins a series of mirthless wild-goose chases as Colin helps Ally stalk her exes across the country. One of them (Chris Pratt) seems to have shed a few hundred pounds and is now engaged to a sexy engineer; another (Anthony Mackie) asks her to marry him for the least romantic possible reasons. She steers clear of the more nightmarish suitors, who are relegated to flashbacks. Ally's clearly wasting her time, and the viewer may come to feel likewise. Unable to build or sustain comic situations, Gabrielle Allan and Jennifer Crittenden's script (adapted from Karyn Bosnak's novel "20 Times a Lady") resorts to jokes so random and context-free they almost qualify as non sequiturs, cueing viewers to laugh when a bit player turns out to be a compulsive finger-sniffer or when Ally's hair catches fire for no reason. Less vulgar and over-the-top than some of the year's other R-rated comedies, "Number" riffs on the pitfalls of promiscuity en route to a predictably safe, sweet, pro-commitment happy ending. Viewers will get their fill of coy near-nudity and genital-centric one-liners, but none of the sophistication or honesty about gender-based double standards they might reasonably expect from such a scenario. Pic does bear a vague resemblance to recent summer hit "Bridesmaids" in the way it uses an upcoming wedding (that of Ally's sister, nicely played by Ari Graynor) to zero in on a single gal's early-midlife funk, but its portrait of distaff distress is nowhere near as insightful or funny. A superior comic actress whose talents have been better showcased elsewhere, Faris works little of her usual magic here, largely because the film essentially shares Ally's dim opinion of herself. There's no secret-weapon intelligence or killer timing behind Faris' ditzy veneer this time; she really is just playing a dumb blonde who can't hold her liquor. Evans' nice smile and nicer muscles get the job done, and Blythe Danner and Ed Begley Jr. submit OK turns as Ally's divorced parents. Glossily helmed by Mark Mylod ("Ali G Indahouse") and crammed with tiresome pop-slathered montages, "Number" also teems with references to Facebook and Twitter that are meant to show how up-to-the-minute the film is, but will have the effect of dating it instantly.Camera (color, Deluxe prints), J. Move Over, Mel Gibson: New Judah Maccabee Project in the Works (Exclusive)

APIC/Getty Images The war for Hanukkah is on. Or Hollywood's version of it anyway. Producer Bruce Nash (Modern Marvels) is pulling together a version of the Hanukkah origin story for a potential feature or TV miniseries.News of the project comes just three weeks afterWarner Bros. acknowledgedthat it is developing a Judah Maccabee/Hanukkahmovie with actor-writer-directorMel GibsonandBasic InstinctscreenwriterJoe Eszterhas. Gibson's involvement in the WB projectas a producer (and possible star and/or director) provokedimmediate recriminationsfrom some in the Jewish community because of his record of making anti-Semitic remarks. The Hanukkah story is a pillar of Jewish history and describes the successful rebellion that liberated the Second Temple in Jerusalem from the Greek occupierAntiochus. Judah Maccabee, who became known as "The Hammer" after leading the fight, instituted Hanukkah -- the "Festival of Lights" -- to celebrate the triumph. Jewish leadersstrongly indicated their displeasurewith Gibson's desire to appropriate such a treasured cultural milestone. That antipathy could provide an advantage for Nash's project, which, unlike the Gibson effort, already has a finished script byScott Abbott, who wrote the HBO movieWinchelland co-wroteIntroducing Dorothy Dandridgefor the cable network. Watch a Rubber Ducky Get Murdered in David Lynch's Vienna Film Festival Trailer

We expect David Lynch to do weird things -- he is David Lynch, after all. And yet, the man still manages to always outdo himself. Take for instance this trailer for the Vienna International Film Festival, which Lynch directed. As with most of his projects, this thing borders on the absurd: It starts with a man holding rocks, then there's a voiceover asking how many rocks the man is holding, then there is a rubber ducky and ... you know what? Describing this thing is pointless. Just watch the clip below and you'll see what we're talking about. [via indieWIRE] Image courtesy of Getty Images
